Major League Dodgeball

How The Dodgeball Film Transpired A Sport

Dodgeball meets Hollywood in this epic tale. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story features a host of stars, including Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Christine Taylor. Released in 2004, the film has a very loyal fan base, aging like a fine wine.

The Dodgeball matches themselves are dramatised, humorous and at times, ridiculously over the top. But ultimately, it’s only made us fall in love with the sport we know today.

The film, thanks to its comedic portrayal of the sport, has helped promote Dodgeball to the mainstream, and in turn given it a zany, fun vibe that differentiates it from many sports around the world.
Is Dodgeball an Official Sport?

Yes, that’s right. Dodgeball is now an official sport. In 2018 Sport Australia officially recognised Dodgeball Australia as a National Sporting Organisation. We’ve seen the Australian Dodgeroos play in international events, winning a World Cup and the Asian Championships.

Is Dodgeball Exactly How it is in the Movie?
The basic concept of the sport draws many similarities to the film – two teams on opposite sides of the court, eliminate the opposition by hitting them with the ball or catching them. The last team standing earns a point.

At Major League Dodgeball (MLD), we often get asked about the film when new players and teams join. The basis answer is – yes it’s like the film, but better! While respecting the sport, we are about fun. We have tunes blasting while players are on court, and buy into the social vibe of what makes Dodgeball so unique.

The famous film quote – Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge – as silly as it may seem, offers a great insight into the sport’s characteristics. Drawing inspiration from the film, we have built a strong community who love and adore the sport, and it continues to grow each year following MLD’s launch in 2012.
